Safe Lifting – Lift It Twice
Safe lifting begins before you ever pick up the load. Thinking through the lift first can help prevent back strains, sprains, and other material-handling injuries.
The idea behind “Lift It Twice” is simple: the first lift is mental; the second is physical.
The First Lift – Plan It
Before touching the load, stop and think about how you will move it.
- How heavy is the load? Test its weight before committing to the lift.
- Is the load bulky, unstable, or difficult to grip?
- Can you safely lift and control it by yourself?
- Should you ask another worker for assistance?
- Would a cart, dolly, hoist, forklift, or other mechanical aid be safer?
- Where is the load going?
- Is the travel path clear of cords, debris, slippery surfaces, or other hazards?
- Will you encounter stairs, doors, uneven surfaces, or restricted spaces?
- Is there a safe location to set the load down?
Correct or remove hazards before beginning the lift.
The Second Lift – Lift It Safely
Once you have planned the movement, perform the physical lift using proper body mechanics.
- Establish firm footing and maintain good balance.
- Get a secure grip on the load.
- Keep the load as close to your body as practical.
- Bend at the knees and hips rather than bending primarily at the waist.
- Lift smoothly using your legs.
- Avoid sudden or jerking movements.
- Keep your back in a comfortable, neutral position.
- Avoid twisting while lifting or carrying. Move your feet to turn your entire body.
- Make sure you can see where you are going.
- Lower the load in a controlled manner using your legs.
- Stop and get assistance if the load becomes difficult to control.
Remember
Never let speed or convenience determine whether you attempt a difficult lift. When a load is too heavy, bulky, or awkward to handle safely, get assistance or use appropriate material-handling equipment.
Lift it twice: first with your mind, then with your body.
