Hard Hats

Your head is vulnerable to serious injury from falling or flying objects, overhead hazards, and accidental contact with fixed objects. A properly selected and worn hard hat provides an important line of defense against these hazards.

How Hard Hats Protect You

A hard hat consists of a protective shell and suspension system designed to help absorb and distribute the force of an impact. Depending on its classification, a hard hat may also provide protection against certain electrical hazards.

Hard hats must meet applicable safety requirements and be appropriate for the hazards of the job. Not every hard hat provides the same type or level of protection.

Selecting the Right Hard Hat

Wear head protection whenever there is a potential for head injury from falling or flying objects, overhead hazards, or electrical exposure.

• Use only approved industrial head protection that meets applicable ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 requirements.
• Select the appropriate type and electrical class for the hazards present.
• Make sure the hard hat fits properly and remains securely positioned on your head.
• Use only accessories approved or permitted by the hard hat manufacturer.
• Wear the hard hat in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
• Never substitute a bump cap for a hard hat when impact protection is required.

Inspect Before Each Use

Inspect your hard hat regularly and before use. Check the:

• Shell for cracks, dents, cuts, gouges, brittleness, discoloration, or other damage.
• Suspension for torn, stretched, frayed, or damaged straps.
• Adjustment system for proper operation.
• Attachment points and accessories for damage or deterioration.

Remove the hard hat from service if its ability to provide protection is questionable.

A hard hat that has sustained a significant impact should be replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions, even when damage is not readily visible.

Proper Fit and Care

The suspension system creates important clearance between your head and the shell. For this reason:

• Adjust the suspension to fit securely and comfortably.
• Never place objects between the suspension and your head unless specifically permitted by the manufacturer.
• Do not drill holes, cut, paint, or otherwise modify the shell unless permitted by the manufacturer.
• Do not use unauthorized stickers, adhesives, solvents, or chemicals that could weaken the shell.
• Keep the shell and suspension clean according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
• Do not intentionally drop, throw, or abuse your hard hat.

Storage

Heat, sunlight, chemicals, and improper storage can damage head protection.

• Store hard hats in a clean, dry location away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
• Do not routinely leave a hard hat on a vehicle dashboard, rear window ledge, or other location exposed to prolonged heat and sunlight.
• Protect the hard hat from chemicals, paints, solvents, and other substances that could damage its components.

Know When Head Protection Is Required

Observe all designated Hard Hat Areas and site-specific PPE requirements. Even when no sign is posted, wear your hard hat whenever the hazard assessment or work conditions require head protection.

Remember that a hard hat can protect you only when it is properly selected, maintained, and worn.

Head injuries can be permanent or fatal. Wear the right hard hat, inspect it before use, adjust it properly, and replace it whenever damage or a significant impact may have compromised its protection.
