Drywall Installation Safety
Drywall installation exposes workers to several hazards, including manual material handling injuries, falls, cuts, struck-by hazards, and exposure to airborne dust, including respirable crystalline silica when silica-containing materials are disturbed. Proper planning, material-handling equipment, good housekeeping, and dust controls can significantly reduce these risks.
Material Handling and Ergonomics
Drywall panels are large, awkward, and heavy. Carrying and positioning them can place significant stress on the back, shoulders, arms, and hands, particularly when workers lift overhead or maneuver sheets in confined areas.
To reduce strains and sprains:
- Have drywall delivered and stacked as close as practical to the installation area.
- Use forklifts, carts, dollies, panel carriers, drywall lifts, or jacks whenever practical.
- Minimize manual carrying, especially over long distances.
- Move one sheet at a time unless equipment is specifically designed for multiple sheets.
- Use panel-gripping tools or suitable grip-enhancing gloves to improve control.
- Use a team lift for large, heavy, or awkward panels.
- Keep the load close to your body when lifting and carrying.
- Lift with your legs while maintaining a stable, neutral back position.
- Avoid twisting while lifting or carrying. Move your feet to change direction.
- Plan the route before moving drywall and make sure doorways, stairs, and walkways are clear.
- Do not attempt to carry drywall up or down stairs alone when the size or weight prevents safe handling.
Drywall sheets should also be stored securely to prevent tipping or falling. Follow site requirements for stacking and storing panels.
Working at Heights and Fall Prevention
Ceiling and upper-wall installation frequently requires employees to work from elevated surfaces. Use an appropriate ladder, scaffold, or other approved work platform for the task.
- Never use boxes, buckets, stacked materials, or other makeshift platforms to gain additional height.
- Inspect ladders, scaffolds, and work platforms before use.
- Set equipment on firm, level surfaces.
- Keep platforms and access areas free of drywall scraps, tools, cords, and other tripping hazards.
- Do not overreach from ladders or work platforms. Reposition the equipment instead.
- Use required guardrails or personal fall protection when employees are exposed to applicable fall hazards.
- Protect floor openings and other unprotected edges in accordance with site fall-protection requirements.
- When installing ceiling panels, periodically check your footing and surroundings rather than continuously looking overhead.
Do not use drywall stilts unless their use is permitted by applicable regulations, the employer, and the project or client requirements, and employees have been trained to use them safely. Where prohibited by company or site policy, stilts shall not be used.
Dust and Respiratory Hazards
Drywall, joint compounds, texture materials, and related products may contain ingredients such as gypsum, mica, talc, calcite, or crystalline silica. Cutting, drilling, mixing, sweeping, and especially sanding can generate airborne dust.
Employees should review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the specific drywall, joint compound, texture, or other product being used.
To control dust exposure:
- Use dust-producing methods only when necessary.
- Use wet methods where appropriate and permitted by the product manufacturer.
- Use tools equipped with effective local exhaust or HEPA-filtered vacuum dust collection when practical.
- Use vacuum-assisted sanding equipment where appropriate.
- Consider pole sanders or other methods that increase the distance between the employee’s breathing zone and the dust source.
- Carefully add and mix powdered compounds to minimize airborne dust.
- Provide adequate ventilation.
- Isolate dusty operations from other employees when practical.
- Do not use compressed air to clean clothing or surfaces when it could create an employee exposure to respirable crystalline silica.
- Avoid dry sweeping where it could contribute to silica exposure. Use HEPA-filtered vacuuming or other appropriate cleaning methods instead.
- Wear respiratory protection when required by the hazard assessment, OSHA requirements, SDS, or company Respiratory Protection Program.
When respirators are required, employees must comply with the company’s Respiratory Protection Program, including applicable medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and respirator-selection requirements.
Cutting and Fastening Drywall
Utility knives, saws, drills, screw guns, routers, and other tools used during drywall installation can cause cuts, punctures, flying particles, and other injuries.
- Inspect tools before use.
- Use the correct tool for the task.
- Keep cutting tools sharp and in good condition.
- Cut away from your body whenever possible.
- Keep hands and other body parts out of the cutting path.
- Retract or sheath utility knife blades when they are not being used.
- Never leave exposed blades where another employee could contact them.
- Keep guards installed on powered cutting equipment.
- Disconnect or de-energize equipment before changing blades, bits, or performing maintenance.
- Wear appropriate eye protection when cutting, drilling, fastening, or sanding.
- Follow manufacturer instructions for all power tools and equipment.
Electrical Hazards
Power tools used for drywall installation must be properly maintained and suitable for the work environment.
- Inspect cords, plugs, and tools before use.
- Remove damaged electrical equipment from service.
- Do not remove grounding prongs from electrical plugs.
- Protect cords from sharp edges, traffic, water, and physical damage.
- Use required ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) protection on construction sites.
- Be aware of concealed electrical wiring before cutting or drilling into existing walls or ceilings.
Housekeeping
Drywall scraps, fasteners, packaging, dust, cords, and tools can quickly create slip and trip hazards.
- Clean work areas regularly throughout the shift.
- Place scraps and waste in designated containers or areas.
- Remove protruding screws, nails, and other sharp materials.
- Keep stairs, aisles, doorways, and emergency exits unobstructed.
- Route extension cords and hoses to minimize tripping hazards.
- Clean accumulated dust using methods appropriate for the material involved.
Personal Protective Equipment
Required PPE will depend on the task and hazard assessment and may include:
- Safety glasses or goggles.
- Work gloves appropriate for handling panels and sharp materials.
- Safety-toe footwear where foot hazards exist.
- Hard hats where overhead hazards are present.
- Hearing protection when noise exposures require it.
- Respiratory protection when required for airborne contaminants.
Remember
Drywall may look relatively harmless, but its weight, awkward dimensions, cutting operations, elevated installation, and dust generation can cause serious injuries. Use mechanical handling equipment whenever practical, maintain good footing and housekeeping, control dust at its source, and use the proper equipment and PPE for each task.
