Back Injury Prevention Tips

Back injuries often occur when workers lift too much, hold loads too far from the body, twist while lifting, or repeatedly work in awkward positions. Good lifting techniques can reduce the risk, but the best approach is to eliminate or reduce manual lifting whenever possible.
Use these tips to protect your back:
- Get close to the load.
Keep the object as close to your body as possible. The farther you reach, the greater the strain on your back. Avoid reaching across pallets, tables, or other obstacles to lift. - Keep heavy materials in the best lifting zone.
Whenever possible, store frequently handled or heavy objects between approximately knee and shoulder height. Avoid lifting heavy objects from the floor or above shoulder level. - Maintain a neutral back position.
Bend at your knees and hips rather than bending primarily at the waist. Keep your back in a comfortable, natural position and lift with smooth, controlled movements. - Avoid twisting and side bending.
Never twist your back while lifting or carrying a load. If you need to change direction, move your feet and turn your entire body. - Keep the load balanced.
Whenever possible, carry loads with both hands and distribute the weight evenly. One-sided carrying can place additional stress on the back and shoulders. - Know when not to lift.
If a load is too heavy, bulky, unstable, or awkward, do not take the risk. Break the load into smaller pieces, use a cart, dolly, hoist, or other mechanical aid, or ask another worker for help. - Avoid repetitive lifting when possible.
Even relatively light loads can cause fatigue when handled repeatedly. Use mechanical assistance, adjust the work height, rotate tasks, or change the work process to reduce repetitive lifting. - Prepare for physical work.
Regular physical activity and appropriate stretching can help maintain strength and flexibility. Brief movement before physically demanding work may also help reduce stiffness.
Remember
There is no single lifting technique that makes every load safe. Keep loads close, avoid twisting and overreaching, use mechanical assistance, and ask for help when a load cannot be handled comfortably and safely.
