Machine Guard Safety – Safety Requirements for Safeguards

Machine guard safety is essential for preventing employees from contacting hazardous moving parts that can cause lacerations, crushing injuries, amputations, or death. Machinery with exposed points of operation, rotating components, nip points, or other hazardous moving parts must be properly safeguarded whenever employees could enter the danger zone.

Guards and safety devices must remain in place and functional whenever machinery is operating.

Hazards Requiring Machine Guarding

Machine safeguarding may be required for hazards created by:

  • Grinding, cutting, shearing, punching, or pressing operations.
  • Squeezing, drawing, rolling, or mixing operations.
  • Rotating shafts, couplings, gears, pulleys, belts, chains, and sprockets.
  • In-running nip and pinch points.
  • Shear points and reciprocating components.
  • Flying chips, sparks, or fragments.
  • Exposed keys, set screws, projections, or other hazardous components.

Employees must never place their hands or other body parts within a machine’s danger zone unless the equipment has been properly shut down and hazardous energy controlled.

Requirements for Effective Machine Guards

1. Prevent Contact

A safeguard must prevent hands, fingers, arms, or other body parts from reaching hazardous moving components.

The guard should prevent employees from reaching over, under, around, or through it and contacting the hazard during normal operation.

2. Be Secure

Guards must be securely attached and durable enough to withstand normal operating conditions.

  • Do not remove, loosen, alter, or reposition guards without authorization.
  • Never tie back, block open, or bypass a guard.
  • Never defeat an interlock or other safety device.
  • Report loose, damaged, or missing guards immediately.

If required guarding is not properly installed and functional, the machine must not be operated.

3. Create No New Hazards

A safeguard must not introduce another hazard. Guards should be designed and installed so they do not expose employees to:

  • Sharp or jagged edges.
  • Unfinished surfaces.
  • Pinch or shear points created by the guard itself.
  • Other conditions that could cause injury.

4. Minimize Interference

Effective safeguards should provide protection while allowing employees to perform their work safely and efficiently.

The fact that a guard makes a task less convenient is never justification for removing, modifying, or bypassing it.

5. Allow Safe Maintenance

Whenever possible, equipment should be designed so routine servicing can be performed without removing safeguards or exposing employees to hazardous moving parts.

If a guard must be removed or a safety device bypassed for servicing or maintenance, the machine must be properly shut down and hazardous energy controlled before work begins.

Follow the company’s established lockout/tagout procedures, including:

  • Isolating hazardous energy sources.
  • Applying required locks and tags.
  • Controlling stored or residual energy.
  • Blocking components that could move or fall.
  • Verifying energy isolation before beginning work.

Inspect Guards Before Use

Machine guards and safety devices should be checked before equipment is operated. Employees should verify that:

  • Required guards are present.
  • Guards are securely attached and properly positioned.
  • Interlocks and other safety devices function correctly.
  • Guards have not been damaged or modified.
  • The safeguard adequately prevents access to the danger zone.

Any missing, damaged, improperly adjusted, or malfunctioning safeguard must be reported. Do not operate the equipment until appropriate protection has been restored.

After Maintenance or Repair

When guards have been removed for authorized servicing or maintenance, they must be properly reinstalled before the equipment is returned to normal operation.

Before startup, make sure all guards are secured, tools and materials have been removed, employees are clear of the danger zone, and the machine is safe to operate.

Remember

Machine guards are designed to keep body parts away from dangerous moving machinery. Never remove, bypass, or defeat a safeguard to make a task faster or easier. A few seconds of convenience are not worth a permanent injury.
