Aerial Lifts Safety Program

The Aerial Lift Safety Program establishes requirements for the safe selection, inspection, operation, positioning, and maintenance of aerial lifts and mobile elevating work platforms used to perform work at elevated locations. The program addresses common aerial lift hazards, including falls, tip-overs, electrocution, overhead power lines, crushing and entrapment, struck-by hazards, unstable ground conditions, falling objects, collisions, and equipment failure. Only trained, evaluated, and authorized employees may operate aerial lifts.
The program covers aerial lift inspections, worksite hazard assessments, equipment capacity and stability, platform and guardrail safety, fall protection, safe travel and positioning, electrical clearances, traffic and pedestrian control, weather conditions, emergency lowering, and rescue procedures. Employees must follow manufacturer operating instructions, remain within rated equipment limitations, use required personal protective equipment and fall protection, and immediately remove defective equipment from service. Requirements also address operator training and retraining, equipment maintenance and repairs, documentation, and safe operating practices. More specific requirements for individual equipment types may be addressed in the Company’s Boom Lift Safety and Scissor Lift Safety programs.
