The Drug and Alcohol Safety Program establishes requirements for maintaining a safe, productive, and drug-free workplace by prohibiting employees from working while impaired by alcohol, illegal drugs, controlled substances, or other substances that may affect their ability to work safely. The program is intended to reduce workplace accidents, injuries, unsafe behavior, property damage, and other risks associated with substance use or impairment. Employees are expected to report fit for duty and remain capable of safely performing their assigned responsibilities throughout the workday.
The program addresses drug and alcohol testing, prohibited conduct, employee responsibilities, reasonable suspicion, post-accident testing, random testing when applicable, prescription and over-the-counter medications, refusal to test, specimen collection, confidentiality, disciplinary action, and return-to-duty requirements. Supervisors are responsible for recognizing and documenting signs of possible impairment and following established reasonable-suspicion procedures. Employees must comply with testing requirements and notify appropriate Company personnel when medication or another condition could affect their ability to safely perform assigned work. The program also addresses employee education, supervisor training, testing procedures, records, and confidentiality. These requirements support workplace safety, drug-free workplace policies, and substance abuse prevention while helping protect employees, customers, property, and the public.
The Drug and Alcohol Safety Program provides a structured framework for maintaining a workplace in which employees are fit for duty and able to perform their responsibilities safely. It establishes responsibilities for management, supervisors, and employees and addresses prohibited conduct, recognition of potential impairment, testing circumstances, employee notification requirements, confidentiality, and appropriate follow-up actions.
The program addresses reasonable-suspicion testing, post-accident testing, random testing when applicable, prescription and over-the-counter medications, refusal to test, specimen collection and testing procedures, supervisor observations and documentation, confidentiality, disciplinary action, return-to-duty requirements, employee education, and supervisor training. It also establishes procedures for responding when an employee appears impaired or reports a medication or condition that could affect the safe performance of safety-sensitive duties.
Provided in editable Microsoft Word format, the program can be customized for your company’s operations, testing policy, safety-sensitive positions, employee responsibilities, and administrative procedures. It can be incorporated into a comprehensive Safety Manual or used as a standalone Drug and Alcohol Safety Program.
