Chemical Hygiene and Chemical Safety establishes practices for protecting laboratory employees from hazardous chemicals and minimizing the potential for exposures, spills, fires, reactions, and other chemical-related incidents. The program addresses chemical hazard identification, Safety Data Sheets, labeling, safe handling, storage and compatibility, exposure controls, chemical fume hoods, personal protective equipment, housekeeping, and proper waste management.

Laboratory personnel must understand the hazards of chemicals they use and follow established procedures for receiving, transferring, using, storing, and disposing of hazardous materials. Appropriate engineering controls and safe work practices should be used to minimize exposure, with suitable PPE selected for remaining hazards. The program also addresses chemical spills, emergency procedures, particularly hazardous substances, employee information and training, exposure monitoring when required, and periodic review of chemical hygiene practices.
