Knee Pad Safety

Knee Pad Safety

Knee pad safety helps protect workers from knee injuries and discomfort caused by frequent kneeling, crawling, and working on hard, rough, or uneven surfaces.

Construction work often requires employees to kneel for extended periods. Roofing, concrete finishing, flooring, electrical, plumbing, welding, and mechanical work can place repeated pressure on the knees. Over time, prolonged or repetitive kneeling can contribute to pain, inflammation, and other musculoskeletal problems.

Reduce the Need for Kneeling

Before relying on knee pads, consider whether the task can be changed to reduce prolonged kneeling.

When practical:

  • Raise the work to a more comfortable working height.
  • Use adjustable work platforms, benches, or stands.
  • Alternate between kneeling, sitting, standing, and other working positions.
  • Rotate tasks to reduce prolonged pressure on the knees.
  • Take periodic breaks from kneeling.
  • Use long-handled or extended-reach tools when appropriate.

When to Use Knee Pads

Knee pads or other appropriate knee protection should be considered when work requires frequent or prolonged kneeling, particularly during:

  • Concrete and masonry work.
  • Roofing and decking.
  • Flooring and finishing work.
  • Electrical and plumbing work.
  • Welding and fabrication.
  • Mechanical and millwright work.
  • Maintenance and repair.
  • Work on hard, rough, hot, cold, or uneven surfaces.

Select knee protection appropriate for the work surface and hazards involved.

Selecting and Wearing Knee Pads

Knee pads should fit properly and provide adequate cushioning without interfering with movement.

  • Select the correct size and style for the task.
  • Position pads directly over the knees.
  • Adjust straps so the pads remain secure without restricting circulation.
  • Do not overtighten straps.
  • Inspect straps, padding, shells, and fasteners before use.
  • Replace damaged, compressed, or excessively worn knee pads.
  • Keep knee pads clean and dry.
  • Make sure knee pads are compatible with work clothing and other required PPE.

Do not improvise knee protection with insulation, rags, duct tape, or other materials not designed for that purpose.

Additional Hazards

Knee pads provide cushioning, but they do not eliminate all hazards associated with kneeling.

Before kneeling:

  • Inspect the surface for nails, screws, glass, sharp objects, and other debris.
  • Check for hot surfaces, chemicals, electrical hazards, and other conditions that knee pads may not protect against.
  • Maintain good housekeeping in the work area.
  • Reposition frequently rather than remaining in one position for extended periods.

Report persistent knee pain, swelling, numbness, or other symptoms according to company procedures.

Remember

Knee pad safety is only one part of protecting your knees. Reduce unnecessary kneeling whenever practical, use properly fitted knee protection, change positions regularly, and inspect the work surface before kneeling.
