Fire Prevention Program

The Fire Prevention Program establishes requirements for preventing workplace fires and protecting employees, property, equipment, and operations from fire hazards. Effective fire prevention begins with identifying potential ignition sources, controlling combustible and flammable materials, maintaining good housekeeping, and ensuring employees understand the fire hazards associated with their work. The program establishes safe practices for preventing fires involving electrical equipment, hot work, flammable and combustible liquids, compressed gases, temporary heating equipment, smoking, and other potential ignition sources.

The program addresses fire prevention planning, fire extinguishers, emergency exits, combustible material storage, flammable liquids, ignition-source control, electrical fire hazards, hot work, welding and cutting, housekeeping, smoking restrictions, and emergency response. Employees must keep exits and access to firefighting equipment unobstructed, properly store combustible and flammable materials, control accumulations of waste and debris, and immediately report fire hazards or unsafe conditions. Fire extinguishers must be properly located, accessible, inspected, and maintained, and employees expected to use them must receive appropriate training. The Fire Prevention Program also addresses employee responsibilities, inspections, training, and corrective actions to reduce the likelihood of workplace fires and support effective emergency preparedness.
