The Bloodborne Pathogens Safety Program establishes requirements for protecting employees from occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM). Employees may encounter blood or infectious materials while providing first aid, performing cleanup, handling contaminated equipment or waste, or completing other assigned work. The program emphasizes exposure prevention and the use of Universal Precautions, treating blood and certain body fluids as potentially infectious to reduce exposure to pathogens such as Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
The program addresses the Exposure Control Plan, exposure determination, engineering and work-practice controls, hand hygiene, sharps safety, housekeeping, decontamination, regulated waste, personal protective equipment (PPE), and the Hepatitis B vaccination. Employees with occupational exposure receive required bloodborne pathogens training and information regarding exposure hazards and protective measures. Procedures are also established for reporting and responding to needlesticks, cuts, splashes, and other exposure incidents, including prompt medical evaluation and appropriate post-exposure follow-up. The program helps employers prevent occupational exposure, maintain appropriate records, and comply with applicable OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens requirements.
