Accidents Are Avoidable
Most workplace accidents can be prevented. Injuries usually result from a combination of hazards, unsafe conditions, unsafe actions, or unexpected changes in the work environment. Recognizing these factors before something goes wrong is an important part of working safely.
Before starting a task, ask yourself: What could go wrong, and what can I do to prevent it?
General Safety Practices
- Know the safe way to perform the job. Follow established procedures and ask questions when you are unsure.
- Look for hazards before starting work. Consider equipment, tools, electrical hazards, overhead work, changing conditions, and the activities of nearby workers.
- Use the right tool for the job. Inspect tools and equipment before use and remove damaged equipment from service.
- Wear required PPE. Select and properly use the protection required for the task and hazards.
- Maintain good housekeeping. Remove debris, control trip hazards, and remove or bend over protruding nails.
- Avoid fall hazards. Never jump between elevations, and use required ladders, access equipment, and fall protection.
- Stay clear of suspended loads. Never position yourself beneath a suspended load or where shifting materials could strike or crush you.
- Respect electrical hazards. Never assume electrical conductors or equipment are de-energized unless they have been properly isolated and verified.

- Maintain safe conditions for yourself and those working around you.
- Set a good example and encourage others to work safely.
- Report hazards, accidents, and near misses promptly.
Accident prevention requires more than following rules. Stay alert, recognize changing conditions, and correct or report hazards before they result in an injury.
Remember: Make it a habit to ask, “How can I make this job safer?” A few moments spent recognizing and controlling a hazard can prevent a serious accident.
