Auto Repair Safety – Auto Body Fender Repair

autofender repairFender repair work involves solvent and chemical use, physical hammering and pulling of dents, as well as welding, sanding, and prepping the area for repair and refinishing.

Removing the tar, dirt, and debris from the fender can prevent beating the grime into the metal. Make sure to read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the cleaner or solvent you use for surface preparation. Wear gloves and safety glasses to prevent chemicals from absorbing into your skin or splashing into your eyes.

Once you have studied the fender and how it was dented, you can choose the proper tools to fix it. Hand tools such as files, picks, hammers, dollies, and spoons should be inspected periodically and kept in good working condition. Wear safety glasses when you are working with striking tools to protect your eyes from flying materials.

If the fender repair requires metal or plastic welding, work in a well-ventilated area. Use proper welding techniques to prevent fire and sparks. Shield the area to protect others from viewing the arc. Protective gear such as a helmet and shield, gloves, gauntlets, and aprons protect you from looking at the arc and from receiving burns from sparks. A respirator protects your lungs from plastic and metal fumes.

After welding, you will need to grind or sand the area for smoothing. Use vacuum-equipped grinders and sanders in well-ventilated areas to control dusts. Wear safety glasses to prevent flying particles from injuring your eye. A dust mask or respirator prevents you from inhaling dust and metal particles.

Auto body repair work can be hard physical labor. Avoid back injuries by lifting with your legs. Use jacks, dollies, aerial lifts, and rolling carts to move heavy items and position them on the vehicle for installation. Ask for help lifting and positioning items.
